The Magic Box
Playing Cinema

A series of recreational and educational workshops aimed at telling stories, for children and young people aged six to sixteen; the workshops reflect the values of the Charter of children’s rights to art and culture.

La Scatola Magica – Giocando al cinema is a project created with the ethos of the “Charter of children’s rights to art and culture”; it introduces young generations to cinema and to the technology of visual and multimedia arts, opening up the opportunity to experiment with new languages and to take part in artistic processes that stimulate creativity and self-expression. Workshops are aimed at children aged six to eleven and young people aged twelve to sixteen.

La Scatola Magica offers a range of activities for the classroom and for groups, these include: watching films and artists’ videos, theatre animation games, introduction to new technologies, creative writing and drawing, experimenting with set design, animating an object, playing with voice over, creating dialogues, dubbing and using music as a narrative device. At the end of the training, participants will master the production of the contents and the creation of a video or sound product, so that they can continue to produce and share their experience of cinema with friends and family.

The first workshops of La Scatola Magica (for young people aged twelve to sixteen) were carried out in the summer of 2013 and during the Christmas holidays of 2013 – 2014, thanks to the support of the multimedia centre CUBO – Centro Unipol Bologna. From an educational, creative and social point of view, results for participants were very rewarding. A number of factors, amongst which the communicative strength of moving images, the use of technology and the creative talents of young people, led to a fresh perspective on cultural and social themes.

Cinemovel Foundation, also thanks to LA SCATOLA MAGICA, supports the travelling cinema activities and the awareness campaigns in Africa.

Images are from “Storie da animare” (animating stories) and “Doppio-gioco: giochi di doppiaggio” (double cross, playing with dubbing), which are projects designed and led by the multimedia artist Nat Wilms and by the actor and dubber Felice Invernici.
