Un evento avvenuto ormai da molto tempo quello di Graziella Campagna, un nome che alla maggior parte delle persone non dice nulla, purtroppo. Ma la sua è la storia di una vittima di mafia. Aveva solo 17 anni e lavorava, in nero, come stiratrice in una lavanderia. Ma Cosa nostra l’ha ugualmente uccisa in modo brutale, perché non esiste nessun millantato codice d’onore che risparmi donne e bambini tra i boss.
Infatti tra i clienti abituali della lavanderia vi era l’ingegner Toni Cannata e il geometra Gianni Lombardo che, quotidianamente si recavano nell’esercizio commerciale e scherzavano con le commesse.
Toni Cannata, però, non era chi diceva di essere: in realtà si chiamava Gerlando Alberti junior, un boss latitante da 3 anni. Anche il collega Lombardo celava la sua vera identità: era infatti Giovanni Sutera, ricercato per omicidio, associazione mafiosa e traffico di stupefacenti. Nella tasca di un indumento lasciato da Cannata, Graziella un giorno trova una piccola agendina. Raccoglie nomi e contatti telefonici, ma più di tutto è la prova che smaschera la falsa identità del latitante.
Agli occhi dei boss non è solo colpevole di aver ritrovato, per caso, un’agendina. È anche la sorella di un carabiniere, un elemento che fa sentire in pericolo i due latitanti.
La sera del 12 dicembre 1985, finito di lavorare, Graziella come sempre raggiunge a piedi la fermata del bus in via Nazionale; ma non salirà sulla corriera.
Il corpo di Graziella viene ritrovato due giorni dopo a Forte Campone, nel bosco di Musolino, su una collina tra Messina e Villafranca Tirrena.
La sera della sua scomparsa, Graziella era salita sull’auto di una persona che conosceva e di cui si fidava. È morta alle 21 di quel 12 dicembre, dopo essere stata fatta inginocchiare per terra. È stata trucidata da 5 colpi di lupara calibro 12 sparati a non più di due metri di distanza.
Ho scelto di parlare della storia di Graziella poiché, questa è l’ennesima prova della crudeltà e violenza con la quale la mafia, finisce per uccidere persone e addirittura bambini per i loro interessi. Graziella, una mia coetanea, vittima del caso, la cui unica colpa è stata aver trovato una piccola agenda. Mi stupisce e rattrista come molte cose avvengano a qualche decina di minuti da dove mi trovo; storie come queste di cui non sapevo nulla e, di cui sono venuto a conoscenza grazie a questo progetto. Storie che ci fanno capire l’importanza, l’urgenza, la necessità di combattere la mafia e la criminalità. Storie che ci fanno capire l’importanza di conoscerle e, di tenere a mente quanto possa essere crudele l’uomo.
Vorrei associare questa vicenda all’illustrazione Memoria/Oblio poiché, nonostante sia un evento datato e, forse dimenticato o non conosciuto da molti, debba essere raccontato e conosciuto. La mafia di ieri e quella di oggi non penso sia cambiata molto, al contrario è cambiata l’opinione pubblica e persiste una maggiore presa di coraggio e di denuncia da parte di molte più persone.
